Large French insurer AXA’s Board of Directors has proposed the renewal of Thomas Buberl’s mandate as a director and intends to reappoint him as the company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
Buberl has served as CEO and Director of AXA since September 2016, having joined the AXA Group as part of its acquisition of the Winterthur Group in 2005.
In 2021, the Board proposed to renew his mandate as CEO and a Director for four years, and he was reappointed to the role in April 2022, with the term set to expire at the 2026 Shareholders’ Meeting.
Today, though, based on the recommendation of its Compensation, Governance & Sustainability Committee, AXA’s Board has proposed the renewal of Buberl’s mandate as a director, again for a four-year term, at the 2026 Annual Shareholders’ Meeting, with the intention of reappointing him as CEO.
Antoine Gosset-Grainville, Chairman of the Board of Directors of AXA, said: “Since 2016, Thomas Buberl has led a remarkable transformation of the AXA Group, refocusing the Group on its core business of insurance, reducing its sensitivity to financial risk, and positioning the Group for future growth. The Group’s strong 2024 results, in a turbulent environment, demonstrate the benefits of this transformation, the resilience of its balance sheet and the strength of its franchise.
“In this context and in light of the challenges to come for the Group, the Board has unanimously decided to propose the renewal of Thomas Buberl’s mandate as a director in 2026 and to reappoint him as Chief Executive Officer upon his renewal.”
Buberl commented: “I would like to thank the Board of Directors for the trust they have placed in me and also to thank my teams for the energy and passion they bring on a daily basis, which has been the key to the Group’s success. We have come a long way since 2016 and I believe that the Group’s transformation over the past years positions us well to navigate the new economic and geopolitical context in which we are operating today. As the Group celebrates the 40th anniversary of the AXA brand, I am proud of all we have achieved, and I am excited to take on the challenges to come.”
