The Hartford, a property & casualty insurer, has appointed Stephen Deane as Chief Claims Officer (CCO), effective November 6, 2023.
In the role, Deane will report directly to John Kinney – Head of Claims and Operations, and will also become a member of The Hartford’s executive leadership team.
He succeeds Mary Nasenbenny, who is set to retire at the end of the year.
She first joined the company in 1999, taking on the role of legal counsel, and was then later named CCO in 2021.
Deane is returning to The Hartford after spending three years working at Liberty Mutual Insurance. During his time at Liberty Mutual he served as EVP and CCO, Global Risk Solutions, North America.
Prior to joining Liberty Mutual, he spent more than 16 years working at The Hartford, where he gained valuable industry experience, working in various leadership roles, including SVP of Group Benefits and Workers’ Compensation claims.
Before he first joined The Hartford, Deane was an attorney at Robinson & Cole, LLP. Additionally, he also managed a claims team at primary insurance firm, Travelers.
Addressing Deane’s return to the company, Kinney said: “We are thrilled that Steve is returning to The Hartford. His outstanding industry experience, established relationships at The Hartford and throughout the industry and proven record of achieving business results position him well to lead our award-winning Claims organization to even greater levels of success.”
Adding: “Mary has been a valued advisor and innovative partner. We are grateful for her many contributions to The Hartford over her 24-year tenure that have helped differentiate how we deliver for our customers. She is a patent holder of our Claims customer loyalty index process and a founding leader of our Heath Services organization, which combines the strength of our Workers’ Compensation and Group Benefits offerings to deliver seamless customer experiences.”
