The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has reported that insurers have now received a total of 60,518 claims related to the Christmas and New Year storms which impacted Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.
Back in December, the ICA declared a ‘Significant Event’ for the aforementioned regions which were impacted by the severe storms between December 23 and Boxing Day.
A few days later, the Council escalated its response to these Christmas storms, declaring an ‘Insurance Catastrophe’.
Then, following further extreme weather events in the new year, the ICA extended its ‘Insurance Catastrophe’ declaration to January 3, “highlighting the extensive impact of severe weather across the east coast from Christmas through to the New Year.”
At the time, Andrew Hall, ICA CEO, commented, “The volume and intensity of the storms that have impacted three states prior to Christmas has caused substantial damage.
“These severe storms have caused significant stress and uncertainty to those impacted, and insurers are already assisting customers with claims and the recovery process.”
In related news, the ICA has also disclosed that insurers have received 6,924 claims in North Queensland following Tropical Cyclone Jasper.
