The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has announced that it has appointed Mervyn Skeet as Director of General Insurance Policy.

Skeet joined the firm in November 2017 as Assistant Director, Head of Tax and has been acting as Interim Director of GI Policy since December 2022, following the recent departure of James Dalton.

A highly experienced veteran within the industry, Skeet brings more than 33 years of knowledge and experience towards his new role.

Before he joined ABI, Skeet served as Global Head of Tax and was also a Managing Director for the XL Group of companies.

Additionally, Skeet is an expert in international tax policy and its impact on the global insurance industry. Throughout his career he has played a leading role in positively influencing the outcomes of the OECD work on Base Erosion and Profit Shifting.

“I’m delighted that Mervyn has been appointed our Director of General Insurance Policy. He brings significant experience to the role and has already made demonstrable progress on a number of priority areas in the first quarter of the year. We have a rich pool of talent here at the ABI and I’m especially pleased that an internal candidate was successful through a highly competitive recruitment process,” said Hannah Gurga, ABI Director General

“These are exceptional times for our industry as we tackle the impact of economic and geo-political challenges whilst looking ahead to the opportunities and future risks of tomorrow. I’m honoured to be an advocate for the general insurance industry and look forward to continuing to work closely with our members to make a difference on the issues that matter most,” commented Mervyn Skeet, ABI Director of General Insurance Policy.

Meanwhile, in late 2022, digital insurance company Lemonade joined the ABI as its latest member following the firm’s launch in the UK.
