Acies MGU unveils construction-focused MGA, Phoenix Specialty

11th April 2024 - Author: Jack Willard

Acies MGU, the technology and data-driven managing general underwriter (MGU), has launched Phoenix Specialty, a new specialist managing general agent (MGA) serving the construction sector.

The MGA will be led by managing director Tim James, subject to regulatory approval.

Previously, James led the successful development, growth and subsequent sale of Ensurance, a specialist construction and engineering MGA.

Prior to that, he spent 16 years working in senior and board-level roles at HSB.

Joining alongside James, is senior construction underwriter Milan Kosorin.

Kosorin previously served as the senior underwriter, energy and construction at Allianz, senior underwriter, engineering at Generali Global Corporate and Commercial, and also spent nearly a decade working at AXA corporate solutions in a variety of global construction underwriting roles.

In addition, the team is comprised of experienced construction underwriters Cameron Mclean, Elyse Gateson and Chantell Wilson.

From what we understand, Phoenix has capacity backing from AXA UK as it launches with Contractors All Risks and Contractors Plant & Equipment products, with further specialist products also said to be in the pipeline.

It has also been confirmed that Phoenix Specialty will be making its official launch with its attendance at this year’s British Insurance Brokers’ Association conference (BIBA), which is taking place on 15 – 16 May in Manchester.

Managing Director at Phoenix Specialty Tim James commented: “Our mission at Phoenix Specialty is to establish a reputable global construction MGA by leveraging a dedicated team of highly experienced technical underwriters to deliver exceptional service. Our immediate priority is to establish a strong presence in the UK market before expanding our footprint internationally to meet the unique challenges faced by the construction industry.”

Mark Heath, the CEO of Acies MGU, said: “This launch marks an exciting new milestone for Acies MGU as we continue to build out our portfolio of highly specialised MGAs which also includes Acies SME and Intangic MGA.

“In Phoenix, we have a team of highly qualified, experienced construction underwriters who are finely attuned to the fast-paced and complex construction market and the needs of their insurance and broker partners. I’m excited to see Phoenix set a strong example of how we can achieve a clearer future in our industry with the delivery of sharper, more advanced solutions for our broker and insurer partners and their clients.”
