AXA XL appoints London Head of US Casualty, Reinsurance

AXA XL, the property & casualty and specialty risk division of global insurer AXA, has named Ian Sawyer as it’s London Head of US Casualty, Reinsurance.

axa-logoWithin this role, he will be based in London and will be responsible for leading AXA XL’s Global Markets US Casualty team in the UK, as well as driving its strategic and profitable development.

As a seasoned reinsurance executive with 35 years of experience within broking, underwriting and claims handling, as well as having a proven track record in the US Casualty Space, Sawyer will certainly bring a lot towards his new role at AXA XL.

He began his career in US Casualty claims at BMS in 1987, before moving on to the underwriting side at the Odyssey Re Group in 1991 underwriting US Casualty treaty business, where he remained for 10 years.

He then joined R K Carvill & Co. in 2001, before joining XL Catlin as Head of US Casualty Treaty, London in 2006. Sawyer remained in this role until 2018, when he left to join SiriusPoint where he became Global Head of Casualty, before returning to AXA XL to take on his current role as London’s Head of US Casualty, Reinsurance.

Addressing Sawyer’s appointment, Marcus Gonzales, Head of London Reinsurance said: “We’re delighted to welcome Ian back to the business. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience built over a long career in long-tail reinsurance.

“Ian’s experience and market profile will help us to continue to serve our clients and London brokers while enhancing our reinsurance business.”

Meanwhile, it was recently reported that AXA XL had promoted Libby Benet to Global Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO).
