According to global GIS and geospatial technology company, RMSI, Cyclone Mocha has left extensive damage and destruction along the coastal region, impacting around 132,000 buildings and 3,000 telecom towers.

RMSI states that the areas impacted were around Sittwe, Yangong, Kangyaung, and Manubin in Myanmar.

An approximate structural economic loss of  $45 million is estimated from buildings and telecom towers in Myanmar.

Cyclone Mocha intensified as an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm (ESCS) as it approached Myanmar on May 14, 2023, at 1430hrs IST, enough to make landfall.

Myanmar has borne the direct impact, with the storm crashing through houses, wireless and wired communication networks, and damaging power lines in the western Rakhine state.

Mocha has left at least 700 people injured and five dead in Myanmar.

In 2008, a similar intensity Cyclone Nargis (ESCS) split through south coastal Myanmar, killing almost 140,000 people and severely affecting millions.

While this cyclone with similar MSW speed has reported fewer casualties, which can be attributed to better precautionary methods and advanced early warning and alert systems in place.
