Dave Draper named CUO for UK and Active Underwriter of Syndicate 1221

US-based insurer The Hartford has appointed Dave Draper as the Chief Underwriting Officer for the UK and Active Underwriter at The Hartford Underwriting Agency, Ltd – Syndicate 1221, subject to regulatory approvals.

The Hartford logoIn a statement, Carl Bach, III, Chief Executive Officer, Hartford Underwriting Agency, Ltd. – Syndicate 1221, said, “I’m pleased to announce that Dave Draper has been appointed Chief Underwriting Officer (UK) & Active Underwriter (subject to regulatory approval).

“Following a strong tenure as interim CUO driving underwriting discipline, performance, and strategic delivery, Dave will now lead our underwriting organisation on a permanent basis.”

Draper is an insurance industry veteran with four decades of experience, having started his career at Builders’ Accident Insurance Company Ltd in 1986 as an Assistant Underwriter.

Over the years, he held increasing senior roles, including Senior Liability Underwriter at Charrington (962) Limited, Director of Newline Service Company at Newline Underwriting Management Limited, and Senior Casualty Underwriter for Chubb Insurance Company of Europe.

After this, Draper served at QBE Insurance (Europe) for nearly a decade as Director of Client Management, Property, Casualty & Motor Division, Director of Client & Broker Management, Casualty & Motor, Head of Business Development, Casualty Division, Head of UK & Ireland Liability, and as a Portfolio Manager, UK & Continental Europe.

For the last seven years, he has served at The Hartford as interim CUO, Head of Third-Party Lines, International, and Head of Casualty, International.

Draper also served at The Navigators Group, Inc. and Chubb as Head of International Casualty and International Casualty Manager UK & Ireland Casualty Manager, respectively.

He commented, “When I first fell into the insurance market almost forty years ago, I certainly didn’t have a role like this in mind. What I did know was that I enjoyed underwriting, building teams, meeting clients and brokers, and learning from good people. Those same things still motivate me today.”

Draper continued, “Underwriting remains a people-led business founded on; relationships, judgement and discipline/oversight. I’m excited for the opportunity ahead and look forward to working closely with our excellent teams as we continue to deliver sustainable, profitable growth and underwriting excellence.
