Global law firm Dentons has appointed former president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, (NAIC), John Huff, as a partner in the Insurance Regulatory practice.

Most recently Huff served as Director of the Missouri Department of Insurance – where he steered one of the largest global insurance markets through the financial crisis, modernised regulation, and updated the solvency regime.

Dentons U.S. CEO Mike McNamara, commented that John’s substantive government background and international leadership within the insurance industry “will immediately complement the extraordinary depth of our highly ranked insurance sector team.

“His reputation and strong professional and personal connections across the insurance industry both in the U.S. and globally will be a tremendous asset for our clients.”

Huff’s experience spans state and insurance regulation, products, claims, coverage analysis, liability and risk mitigation, run-offs, captives, and technology and innovation in the insurance industry.

As a global leader with over 25 years industry experience, his accomplishments include; reforming group holding company requirements, instituting supervisory colleges; revising credit for reinsurance allowances to increase global competition, establishing own risk solvency assessment for larger insurers; and initiating corporate governance oversight of insurers.

In addition, he has worked to drive growth in captive insurance markets while regulating more than 450,000 licensed professionals through 40 commissions and hundreds of state-chartered financial institutions.

Huff earned his JD from Washington University School of Law, he holds a MBA from St. Louis University and a Bachelors from Southeast Missouri State University.
