Fidelis MGU appoints three to London-based underwriting & actuarial teams

Fidelis MGU has announced the appointments of Daniel O’Connell as Head of Bespoke, Armand van Hien as Head of Marine Cargo and Greg Bowman as Head of Capital.

O’Connell, who joins Fidelis MGU’s underwriting team as Head of Bespoke, will be responsible for overseeing the group’s contingency, credit & political, political violence, terrorism and transactional liability underwriting.

He most recently served at AXA XL, where he spent almost three years as Head of Crisis Management for the UK and Lloyd’s, and Group Chief Underwriting Officer for crisis management and special risks.

Van Hien, who joins Fidelis MGU’s underwriting team as Head of Marine Cargo, will be responsible for overseeing the marine cargo book of business, alongside managing all underwriting practices in this class.

Van Hien joins from Brit Insurance where he was a marine cargo underwriter. Before this, he spent six years at Chubb, also on the marine cargo team.

Both O’Connell and van Hien will report to Richard Coulson, CEO of Insurance & UK CUO.

Meanwhile, Bowman joins Fidelis MGU’s actuarial team as Head of Capital, where will be responsible for the firm’s internal model as well as expanding relationships across underwriting and outwards reinsurance to ensure the model is appropriate for all needs.

He joins Fidelis MGU from Guy Carpenter where he was most recently a broker actuary.

Bowman has over a decade of experience as both a practitioner and consultant with a strong capital modelling background from his time as Head of Capital at Hamilton and senior capital management roles at R&Q and Willis Towers Watson. In the new role, he will report to Gary McInally, Chief Projects Actuary.

Fidelis MGU states that these hires are part of its wider growth strategy focused on attracting best-in-class talent.

Since the start of 2023, the firm has made over 40 hires across all locations and departments.

Fidelis announced in the summer of 2022 its intention to create Fidelis MGU, which would be bifurcated from the existing Fidelis companies.

The deal was approved by regulators back in November of 2022 and became effective at the beginning of this month.
