AXIS Capital, a global specialty underwriter and provider of insurance and reinsurance solutions, has appointed John Owen as Chief Executive of AXIS Managing Agency Limited (AMA), subject to regulatory approval.
According to AXIS, in his new role, Owen will be responsible for AMA, the managing agent arm of AXIS Capital that oversees the group’s Lloyd’s of London operations including Syndicate 1686.
An experienced veteran across the industry, Owen has been with AXIS (and Novae prior to its merger with AXIS in 2017) for 19 years, working across a variety of underwriting and leadership roles, having been Head of Marine & Political Risks until May 2023 and now Head of Specialty, Global Markets.
Owen reports to Mark Gregory who previously held the position of AMA CEO, in addition to his current role as Head of Global Markets at AXIS.
AXIS confirmed that Gregory remains a board member of AMA.
Gregory, commented on Owens’ appointment: “John’s extensive underwriting and leadership experience within AXIS and the Lloyd’s market equip him very well for the management and regulatory responsibilities of his new position as CEO of AXIS Managing Agency.”
Adding: “The depth of John’s market knowledge, his experience in underwriting across various specialty lines, and his strong relationships across the market, will strongly support our efforts to elevate AXIS as a leading specialty insurer and reinsurer.”
In their results for the third quarter of 2023, AXIS Capital posted an improvement in its combined ratio to 92.7%, supported by a better underwriting result in both its insurance and reinsurance segments.
