José Ospina promoted to Liberty SM LatAm Reinsurance Regional Manager

Liberty Specialty Markets (LSM) has promoted the former LSM General Manager for Columbia José Ernesto Ospina to the newly-created role of LatAm Reinsurance Regional Manager as part of the firm’s revamp of its Latin American treaty reinsurance strategy.

Reinsurance in Latin AmericaIn his new role, Ospina will report to Kirk Maddern, LSM’s Group COO in London and Miguel Martinez, LSM’s Head of Reinsurance Business Development.

LSM said it plans to invest in its regional development programme through a renewed focus on its treaty reinsurance underwriting in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico and Peru.

The LSM has two franchises in Latin America in Brazil and Colombia, which it aims to leverage further as it expands its operations in the region.

Dieter Winkel, President Liberty Mutual Reinsurance, said as one of the first Lloyd’s insurers to have a physical presence in South America, the firm’s aim was to explore the opportunities presented by the growth of these economies and to lay down a network of strong relationships with regional brokers.

He added; “eight years on we are seeking to build on those foundations by using the knowledge we have acquired to sharpen our underwriting focus and build our reputation as market makers in core areas in property, casualty and specialty.”

Ospina brings 30 years insurance market experience to his new role, including having worked with the World Bank as a Risk transfer Consultant, and as an RI manager Allianz.
