Karen Tan is set to start a new position at Swiss Re as CRO Life & Health Reinsurance, Member of the L&H EC.
Tan joined Swiss Re as Chief Risk Officer for Asia Pacific in May 2014. In this role, her team worked to ensure that the business had the necessary culture, expertise and framework to support good risk-taking.
In July 2018, her portfolio expanded to also include risk management of Swiss Re’s Life and Health Reinsurance business globally.
Tan later took on the role of Head of Life & Health Products Asia in April 2022, with APAC regional responsibility for the conduct of Swiss Re’s L&H reinsurance business, including costing and underwriting new business.
Here, she also oversaw the delivery of Swiss Re’s L&H Plan in the region and lead L&H growth initiatives in Asia.
Tan was previously Chief Actuary of Zurich Life Insurance Company in Switzerland, overseeing operations in the Swiss domestic market, International Group business, as well as branches in Asia and the Middle East.
Before that, she headed up Zurich Insurance Group’s Global Life Risk Analysis department and was responsible for Zurich’s risk and capital management models and approach for its Life businesses globally.
According to Swiss Re, Tan was already a member of the firm from 1998 to 2008, holding multiple positions in Group Capital Management, Finance and Life & Health.
Tan is a Fellow of the UK Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and holds a Master of Business from the Nanyang Technological University of Singapore. Additionally, she completed the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School in 2018.
