Markel Insurance, the insurance, reinsurance and investment holding company, has announced the appointment of Phil Jones as Chief Information Officer (CIO), International, effective immediately.
In the role, Jones will lead the technology strategy for Markel’s international business. His will shape and deliver the organisation’s technology vision while ensuring systems, data and digital capabilities develop in step with the company’s focus on operational excellence.
Working closely with international leadership, Global Security Services and IT teams across Markel Group Inc., Jones will prioritise strengthening operational resilience, improving service performance and supporting innovation across the insurer’s international platform.
Jones will also work to strengthen alignment between technology and business teams. The aim is to help the organisation generate greater value from its data, modernise core technology infrastructure and support teams across Markel’s five regional businesses with high-performing systems.
His appointment reflects the company’s ongoing investment in leadership as it expands its capabilities and supports growth across global markets. Based in London, Jones will report to Carys Lawton-Bryce, Chief Operations Officer at Markel International.

Jones joins the business with extensive experience in CIO and senior technology leadership roles across specialty insurance, financial services and the public sector. Prior to this, he served as Global Chief Information Officer at Aspen Insurance, where he led IT strategy, cloud transformation programmes, cyber-defence initiatives and a global technology workforce, delivering improvements in performance, security and cost efficiency.
Earlier in his career, Jones held the position of Executive Director of Service Delivery and Operations at the UK Ministry of Defence, overseeing mission-critical global IT services. He has also held senior technology leadership roles at Prudential plc, Lloyds Banking Group and Atos.
