Markel Insurance delivered a 40% surge in adjusted operating income to $376.5 million for Q2 2026, serving as the primary growth engine for Markel Group.
Underwriting profit for the core specialty insurance division more than doubled to $142.1 million in Q2 2026, up from $63.2 million in the same period of 2025.
Improved attritional loss ratios and favourable prior-year reserve development reportedly supported this increase.
At the same time, the Markel Insurance segment delivered a 93% combined ratio in Q2 2026, despite absorbing a two-point impact from net catastrophe losses related to the ongoing Middle East conflict and a further two-point drag from the runoff of its exited Global Reinsurance division.
For the first six months of 2026, adjusted operating income within the insurance business rose 35% to $746 million.
At the consolidated group level, total operating revenues for the second quarter held steady at $4.02 billion, matching the figure reported in Q2 2025.
Meanwhile, net operating income rose to $1.56 billion compared to $1.11 billion in Q2 2025, buoyed by $1.17 billion in net investment gains driven by equity market movements.
On an adjusted basis, which strips out fluctuations in the equity portfolio, consolidated adjusted operating income for the quarter stood at $436.1 million, down from $578.3 million a year ago due to performance variances in non-insurance units, including a credit loss provision within its fronting and financial segment.
Tom Gayner, Chief Executive Officer of Markel, commented, “In the first half of 2026, our insurance underwriting improved, our businesses generated strong cash flow, and we continued to allocate capital with discipline, including ongoing share repurchases funded from net earnings.
“Also, our diversified array of businesses generated nearly $1 billion of adjusted operating income. For the balance of 2026, the improvement of our insurance operations should continue.”
