Marsh Risk, part of global insurance broker and risk adviser Marsh, and Apollo, a specialty insurer within Skyward Specialty Insurance Group, have announced the launch of a new insurance facility developed for Uber Technologies Inc..

The arrangement is designed to support the expansion of autonomous vehicles operating through Uber’s global platform.

The new facility centres on the Autonomous Vehicle Insurance Program (AVIP), a tailored insurance solution created to support companies working within Uber’s autonomous vehicle ecosystem.

These include technology developers, fleet operators, vehicle manufacturers and owners, as well as original equipment manufacturers involved in the development and operation of driverless ride-hailing and delivery services.

The programme forms part of Uber’s broader Uber Autonomous Solutions initiative, which aims to help partners introduce and scale autonomous services in different markets.

AVIP is underwritten by Apollo’s ibott division and provides dedicated insurance capacity for Uber’s autonomous vehicle partners. The programme offers both primary and excess liability cover, with pricing that reflects each partner’s safety performance.

The facility combines insurance protection for multiple parties under a single master policy. By bringing coverage together in this way, the programme is intended to reduce administrative complexity and provide a more streamlined approach to insurance across Uber’s autonomous vehicle operations.

Melissa Daly, Autonomous, Mobility, & Platform Risk Practice Leader, Marsh Risk, said: “Marsh is committed to enabling the growth of the autonomous vehicle sector through tailored risk and insurance solutions. Our work with ibott and Uber represents a meaningful step forward in delivering a scalable, cost-effective framework for AV risk management and accelerating the responsible deployment of autonomous technology.”

“We understand the challenges and evolving landscape of the autonomous vehicle space, and we’re excited to offer a comprehensive insurance solution that is exclusively available to our partners,” commented Andy Parr, VP of Insurance at Uber.

“Uber’s Autonomous Vehicle Insurance Policy is a critical part of a comprehensive suite of unique services and capabilities that is helping partners to build and successfully commercialise autonomous vehicles in multiple markets around the world.”

Chris Moore, President, Apollo ibott – Commercial, added: “Autonomous vehicles demand a fundamentally different approach to risk and insurance. With more than 10 years of proven success in AV risk solutions, ibott is a market leader in designing coverage tailored to this evolving ecosystem. Our collaboration with Marsh and Uber to develop this proprietary program reflects a new underwriting mindset. By consolidating coverage and aligning interests across the value chain, this solution reduces uncertainty and provides the protection required for large-scale deployment.”
