Melanie Lopes leaves SiriusPoint for QBE Re in Bermuda

QBE Re, the reinsurance arm of global insurer QBE Insurance Group, has added Melanie Lopes from SiriusPoint as Assistant Vice President (AVP), Lead Treaty Underwriter in its growing Bermuda office.

melanie-lopes-qbeIn her new role, Lopes reports to David Cary, Senior Vice President (SVP) Underwriting Manager and Head of Property and Casualty Bermuda.

She joins from specialty insurer and reinsurer, SiriusPoint, where she served as AVP, Property Underwriter. Previously, Lopes held the role of AVP, Specialty Underwriting prior to the merger between Third Point Re and Sirius Group.

The addition of Lopes follows the appointment of Tracey Gibbons in 2021 as Head of QBE Re Bermuda.

Also last year, QBE Re welcomed Greg van der Made as Treaty Underwriter and Lauritz Schwarz as Underwriting Assistant.

Commenting on Lopes’ appointment, Gibbons said: “Mel is part of the continued expansion of the Bermuda office and QBE Re as a whole. We are building the team and the product offering to be able to provide our brokers and clients with the support they need across multiple classes with best-in-class underwriters.

QBE Re notes that it has witnessed greater demand from global clients for specialty reinsurance and property business in Bermuda and sees a renewed opportunity under multiple lines of business.
