During W. R. Berkley’s Q2 2026 earnings call, Chief Executive Officer Rob Berkley offered a candid assessment of current industry dynamics, warning that Mother Nature is lulling the property market into a “false sense of comfort.”
He cautioned that while this temporary period of calm may persist, market realities will inevitably reassert themselves, forcing the industry to learn the hard way once again.
“There is no doubt that in certain product lines, clouds are building. Those that are weighted towards certain lines, such as property, it is going to get tougher before it gets easier,” Berkley observed during the call.
According to the executive, the property arena is currently seeing the industry’s most reckless behaviour.
Berkley singled out shared and layered programs as a primary concern, warning that irrational market practices are beginning to cascade into broader property lines.
On casualty reinsurance, Berkley added, “I think that there are people that are willing to write the business on the reinsurance side.
“It’s ceding commissions that don’t make sense to us. Our colleagues that are running our reinsurance businesses, to their credit, have the knowledge, expertise, and discipline to do the right thing. Many of us refer to it as cycle management. They’re doing it, and we are grateful for that. What will that mean over time?”
Berkley continued, “There is no doubt that in certain product lines, as I mentioned earlier, clouds are building. Those that are weighted towards certain lines such as property, it is going to get tougher before it gets easier.
“I think we’re going through a period of time where Mother Nature is lulling the property market into a false sense of comfort. This will go on perhaps for some period of time, and then once again the industry will learn the hard way.”
W. R. Berkley reported record gross written premiums (GWP) of $4.1 billion for the second quarter of 2026, up from $3.97 billion in Q2 2025. Net income increased 12.7% to $452.3 million, while operating income rose 18.2% to $497.1 million.
