Northern Re, a structured reinsurance company specialising in high-frequency, low-severity property and casualty risk portfolios, has confirmed the appointment of Tarek Frahi as Head of Data Science.
Frahi joins Northern Re with a background covering quantitative finance, asset management and reinsurance.
In his new position, he will oversee the further development of the company’s data science and modelling functions, with a focus on strengthening underwriting support, risk analytics and portfolio management as Northern Re continues to expand its platform.
Prior to joining the company, Frahi was Director of Quantitative Investments at AlphaTrAI, where he worked on the development and implementation of systematic investment approaches and led advanced modelling work across multi-strategy portfolios.
He previously held the role of Lead Data Scientist at RBC Reinsurance, where he collaborated with actuarial and underwriting teams to streamline pricing processes, build risk modelling tools and embed analytical techniques into operational workflows.
“Tarek’s appointment reflects the importance we place on data and modelling within the business,” commented Anthony McKelvy, CoFounder of Northern Re. “As the platform grows in scale and complexity, the ability to apply these tools consistently across the lifecycle of a transaction becomes even more important. That is an approach we have been deliberate about from the start and one we continue to build on.”
Frahi’s wider experience also includes senior data science roles within hedge fund and trading environments, where he focused on developing production-ready systems to convert complex analytical frameworks into practical applications for business use.
“Northern Re has been deliberate in how it combines technology, data and underwriting judgement,” added Frahi. “That creates a platform where data and modelling are applied in practical, decision-driven ways. I’m looking forward to contributing to the continued development of those capabilities as the business grows.”
Frahi holds a PhD in Computational Mechanics and a Master’s degree in Mathematics, and completed postgraduate research at MIT. His academic output includes several peer-reviewed publications in applied mathematics, data science and engineering.
