Christopher Gray, Divisional Director, Reinsurance, at Westfield Specialty International, has argued that success in today’s reinsurance market depends on more than capacity alone, demanding expertise, strong partnerships and a clear commitment to delivering value.

westfield-specialty-logoAs the annual Baden-Baden reinsurance meeting approaches, Gray sees it as an “invaluable opportunity” to strengthen relationships, exchange insights and explore solutions to the challenges facing an evolving market.

“As pricing pressure intensifies and products become harder to differentiate on cost alone, the quality of underwriting expertise, claims support and client service will increasingly become important points of distinction,” the executive added.

According to Gray, excess capacity remains a key driver of reinsurance market dynamics, with intense competition across most classes.

Against a relatively benign catastrophe environment so far in 2026 and continued market consolidation, Gray expects downward pressure on pricing to persist through the 1 January renewals.

“While the extent of change will depend on the individual class, territory, loss experience and quality of the underlying risk, cedants across the market will be reviewing their programme structures, particularly attachment points,” the executive observed.

Gray continued, “In this environment, reinsurers must continue to demonstrate the value they bring to clients, whether through innovation, technical expertise, or collaborative solutions to increasingly complex risk challenges. A critical component of this remains meaningful, face-to-face engagement.

“As automation, artificial intelligence and digital solutions become more prevalent, it could be easy for underwriters to take shortcuts and overlook the importance of spending time with clients. Technology and data analytics are increasingly crucial underwriting tools, but relationships remain a cornerstone of the reinsurance market.

“Through direct dialogue, scoping discussions and ongoing engagement, we gain a deeper understanding of our clients’ needs and are better positioned to help them address emerging challenges and opportunities.

“While being competitive on price is always important at this stage of the underwriting cycle, reinsurers who can tailor coverage to suit their clients’ specific needs will be those that stand out.

He concluded, “Success in today’s reinsurance market requires more than capacity alone; it requires expertise, partnership and a clear commitment to delivering value.”
