Santam Syndicate 1918, a Lloyd’s syndicate and part of the Santam Group, has announced the appointment of Atang Matebesi as Chief Commercial Officer (CCO).
In December 2025, Santam Group received final approval from Lloyd’s for Santam Syndicate 1918 to begin underwriting business from 1 January 2026.
Matebesi brings a combination of insurance leadership, corporate finance, private equity, strategy, and actuarial expertise to the syndicate.
Since 2023, he has served as Chief Executive Officer of Santam Client Solutions (SCS), where he has led the business’s successful turnaround over the past three years, while also driving key group-wide initiatives.
Prior to that, Matebesi was Executive Head: Corporate Finance at Sanlam, where he originated and executed strategic transactions for the Sanlam Group, advising on partnerships, acquisitions, mergers, disposals and business strategy.
Previously, he held private equity investment principal and analyst roles at Actis and Ethos. Earlier in his career, he was a Corporate Finance Transactor at Rand Merchant Bank.
The appointment follows Santam Syndicate 1918 strengthening its underwriting team with the addition of two experienced London Market professionals in July 2026.
