Santam Syndicate 1918, the Lloyd’s syndicate of Santam Group, Africa’s largest non-life insurer, has appointed Gavin Coley as Head of Claims.
Coley will be based in London and will report directly to Rob Vetch, Chief Financial Officer of Santam Syndicate 1918.
The appointment brings more than three decades of insurance and reinsurance experience to Santam Syndicate 1918. Over the course of his career, Coley has held a number of senior claims positions across the Lloyd’s and wider insurance markets, developing expertise in claims management, technical oversight and operational leadership.
Prior to joining Santam Syndicate 1918, Coley was Head of First Party Claims at Everest. In that role, he oversaw claims operations, provided technical guidance and led strategic projects, while also managing portfolio performance and major loss reporting. Earlier appointments included senior claims roles at Liberty Specialty Markets, Neon and MS Amlin, where he was responsible for a broad range of claims portfolios across different classes of business.
Santam Syndicate 1918 highlighted Coley’s long-standing involvement in industry initiatives and market committees. During his career, he has contributed to organisations and working groups including the Lloyd’s Strategic Claims Committee, the Binder Authority Strategic Claims Group and the LMA/IUA Energy Group.
He also served as chair of the LMA Property Insurance Group and became the first chair of the LMA War and Terrorism Claims Group, demonstrating his commitment to supporting the development of claims standards and practices within the market.
Santam Syndicate 1918 said the appointment forms part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen its leadership capabilities as the business continues to expand its presence within the Lloyd’s market. The move also supports the wider objectives of Santam Group’s FutureFit 2030 strategy, which focuses on international growth and diversification.
As Head of Claims, Coley will be responsible for leading the claims function at Santam Syndicate 1918, helping to support underwriting outcomes while ensuring a high standard of service for brokers and clients.
Vetch commented: “Gavin brings a wealth of technical expertise, leadership experience and market credibility to the Syndicate. His track record in managing complex claims portfolios, driving operational excellence and building high-performing teams makes him an outstanding addition to our leadership team. We are delighted to welcome him to Santam Syndicate 1918 and look forward to the contribution he will make as we continue to grow our presence within Lloyd’s.”
Coley added: “I am delighted to be joining Santam Syndicate 1918 at such an exciting stage in its development. The Syndicate has established strong foundations and a clear ambition for growth, supported by the strength of the wider Santam Group. I look forward to working alongside the team to further develop the claims function, deliver exceptional service to brokers and clients, and support the next phase of the Syndicate’s journey.”
