Canopius Group strengthens Credit & Political Risk team with key appointments

Canopius Group, a leading global specialty (re)insurer, has announced strategic appointments to bolster its Credit & Political Risk team in London and the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.

canopius-logoAngelos Deftereos joins as the Head of Structured Credit, bringing over two decades of experience to Canopius.

His previous role as Managing Director – Structured Finance at Volante Global focused on significant risk transfer (SRT) insurance, a growth area that he will lead in his new position.

Angelos has an extensive background, having held senior roles at AXA XL, Morgan Stanley, Aon, Marsh, and Goldman Sachs.

Boris Medimorec and Virad Patel have been appointed as Underwriters. Boris, with over 25 years of experience, joins from UK Export Finance, after spending time with AJ Gallagher and MUFG. Virad, previously Vice President for Loan Capital Markets at ING, brings a decade of expertise across risk, origination, and distribution functions.

Patrick Sheriff, Head of Credit & Political Risk in London, expressed confidence in the new additions, stating, “Adding such high-caliber professionals to our team demonstrates Canopius’ long-term commitment to this class. Their collective skillset diversifies and complements our existing pool of expertise, and we are excited to welcome them as we look to strengthen our lead position in this market.”

Dimitri Plastiras is set to join the APAC team as an Underwriter in February. Currently an Associate Director for Debt Advisory Services at KPMG in Sydney, Dimitri brings a wealth of experience from his 12-year tenure at Westpac, specializing in Structured Asset Finance, Trade Finance, and Financial Institutions.

Jamie Jeffers, Head of Credit and Political Risk in APAC, emphasised the strategic importance of the Credit & Political Risk class amid rising economic and political volatility globally.

Jeffers stated, “We are delighted to welcome Dimitri to the team in APAC, further strengthening our capacity to support clients in managing their evolving risks.”
