Global specialty insurance and reinsurance company, Chaucer, has named Mike Smith as the new lead of its Marine Specialty division, as the company moves to reposition its Marine insurance lines.
Smith brings more than 35 years of experience within the marine insurance sector to the role, with a specialist focus on all aspects of marine cargo and freight liability cover from a banking and claims management perspective.
Most recently, he served as a Director at global re/insurance brokerage Willis Towers Watson (WTW), where he was responsible for servicing a portfolio of global cargo accounts.
The addition of Smith comes as Chaucer looks to reposition its Marine insurance lines in order to support product development and technology driven sector innovation, enhanced service, and future growth in targeted segments.
Effective January 2022, Chaucer will implement numerous changes to its Marine lines, including the launch of Marine Global, which will be led by Phil Graham, the incumbent Head of Marine at Chaucer, and incorporates the London and International lines of Cargo, Specie, Hull, War and Liability, and the Ports and Terminals portfolio.
Additionally, Marine Specialty launches and will be led by Smith. This unit will include Marine PI and Transport and Logistics, the Freight Forward business in London and Lonham, Chaucer’s specialty cargo, freight and logistics liability insurer based in Ipswich, where he will be working closely with Mike Ayers and the underwriting team.
“We’re delighted to welcome Mike to Chaucer. His depth of expertise in Marine Insurance will be invaluable as the team undergoes changes to better position us for future growth.
“Mike’s reputation for driving client service and leading a motivated team to achieve success will make him a real asset to the firm,” said Nicola Stacey, Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO) at Chaucer.
