Pinion Insurance, a London-based specialty insurance carrier established earlier this year, has appointed insurance executive Gary S. Maier as Chief Executive Officer of its US operations, with the appointment taking effect on 29 September 2026.

Maier will be responsible for Pinion’s US operations as the company continues to develop its specialty insurance platform and expand its work with managing general agents (MGAs). Pinion provides insurance capacity to MGAs operating across the US, UK and European markets.

Maier has almost 40 years of experience in the insurance sector, with a career spanning underwriting, distribution, MGAs, product development and corporate development. Pinion said his experience will support its continued development in the US market.

“Gary’s experience is a strong fit with Pinion’s focus on underwriting excellence, innovation, and close collaboration with MGAs,” commented Laura Baird, Pinion Co-Founder and Group Chief Technology Officer. “He is a highly respected industry leader and innovator, and we are delighted to welcome him to the team.”

Prior to joining Pinion, Maier was CEO of Ledger Risk Markets and Chief Revenue Officer at Ledger Investing. During his time with Ledger, he worked on casualty insurance-linked securities (ILS) platforms, including sourcing risk originators and supporting the development of a securitisation marketplace. Pinion said the marketplace placed more than $2.5 billion in premium during its first several years.

Earlier in his career, Maier served as Managing Principal at Capacity Group of New Jersey Inc., a retail and wholesale insurance brokerage. He also spent eight years at Tower Group Inc., where he was Executive Vice President and Chief Underwriting Officer from 2005 to 2013. His responsibilities included US marketing and distribution and corporate development.

Maier began his insurance career with Chubb, where he spent more than 17 years and progressed from trainee to Zone Executive Underwriting Officer.

“Pinion is bringing a new approach to specialty insurance,” added Maier. “Pinion is combining deep underwriting expertise with modern technology and data. It makes the MGA and capacity relationship more transparent, efficient, and responsive. I’m excited to join the team and look forward to building and growing Pinion’s US operations.”

Pinion’s latest appointment follows the addition of other senior executives as the company develops its US platform. Earlier this year, Pinion appointed Kyle Selvig as US Chief Underwriting Officer and Chris Jones as Group Chief Financial Officer.

The company has also introduced Sarrus, its proprietary technology platform, which Pinion describes as a fully integrated system intended to support data exchange across the MGA sector. The platform provides daily portfolio visibility and audit-ready reporting. Pinion has said Sarrus is intended to address processes within the MGA market that it considers fragmented and outdated.

“Gary brings unique insights, unrivalled experience and a shared vision for Pinion’s profitable growth in the US,” noted Philip Vandoninck, Pinion Co-Founder and Group Chief Underwriting Officer. “He is also a proven market maker, an innovator, and we are very pleased to welcome him to Pinion.”

Maier’s appointment forms part of Pinion’s broader expansion of its US operations, alongside the company’s continued development of its underwriting platform and technology infrastructure.
