Global Parametrics, part of the CelsiusPro Group, has partnered with Frontier Markets, a rural social commerce platform, to launch a gender-smart parametric insurance solution in India.
This product has been specifically designed and is initially being piloted to protect smallholder women farmers in four North-West India districts across Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
The program covers excess moisture and drought risks during the current Rabi cropping season, November 2025 to April 2026.
This solution was made possible through the Frontier Markets’ AI-enabled Meri Saheli App, and its strong network of local women entrepreneurs – the Super Sahelis – both of which enabled access to some of the most remote female-led households, to offer them access to climate protection for their crops.
By using local networks, the partnership ensures that climate protection is not just available, but accessible to those who have historically been excluded from formal financial services.
Unlike traditional insurance, which requires individual damage assessments that take time, parametric insurance triggers automatic payments on pre-defined weather data.
The model has already proven its efficiency. A parametric payout for excess moisture in November 2025 was triggered for 14 locations and is being distributed directly to affected farmers by Frontier Markets, marking the successful launch of a scalable model for nationwide expansion.
The initiative is supported with funding from the Natural Disaster Fund (NDF), managed by Global Parametrics, through its Technical Assistance Facility.
The NDF is funded by the UK government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and by Germany’s development bank KfW on behalf of BMZ, with risk-sharing support from Hannover-Re.
Humanity Insured provides critical premium subsidies, ensuring the product remains affordable for the most vulnerable farmers.
Moreover, Go Digit General Insurance serves as the local insurer, with Howden India, acting as the broker to structure the parametric offering.
