The Global Shield Solutions Platform (GSSP) is providing support to the Southeast Asia Disaster Risk Insurance Facility Insurance Company (SEADRIF) to expand Climate and Disaster Risk Finance and Insurance (CDRFI) capabilities across the region.
This collaboration aims to assist member nations in enhancing their resilience and response strategies for climate-driven events.
With the funding of GSSP, a multi-donor fund that provides quick, pre-arranged insurance and emergency funding to climate-vulnerable developing countries, SEADRIF will implement a programme of insurer engagement, risk data analytics and knowledge-sharing activities.
Its agenda will also include country-level workshops, and targeted training initiatives, all across Southeast Asia.
“This initiative will strengthen engagement with SEADRIF member countries and support the development of more locally relevant approaches to disaster risk financing. It also aims to deepen institutional and technical capacity while broadening access to practical knowledge resources and specialised training,” GSSP stated.
In partnership with government bodies, public insurers, and key stakeholders, the initiative seeks to enhance the understanding of disaster and climate risks while facilitating the development of country-specific use cases.
By fostering readiness for pioneering insurance and risk financing frameworks, the project will also launch a SEADRIF Fellowship and training curriculum.
These efforts are designed to cultivate local proficiency and encourage a robust regional community focused on Climate and Disaster Risk Finance and Insurance (CDRFI).
As climate-related hazards become more frequent and severe, the need for operational, context-specific solutions is becoming increasingly urgent, GSSP highlights.
This initiative helps governments improve risk assessment, preparedness, and financial protection. By boosting knowledge and regional cooperation, it empowers public institutions to build resilience and advance effective disaster management and adaptation.
Dr. Annette Detken, Head of Global Shield Solutions Platform, said: “Strengthening climate and disaster risk finance capacities is critical to helping countries better manage the impacts of increasingly frequent and severe climate-related shocks.
“Through our support to SEADRIF, we aim to expand access to practical knowledge, technical expertise and learning opportunities that can help governments make more informed decisions about financial protection and resilience. By investing in local capacity and regional exchange, this initiative will contribute to stronger, more sustainable approaches to climate and disaster risk finance across Southeast Asia”.
Benedikt Signer, CEO of the SEADRIF Insurance Company, commented: “ASEAN countries are stepping up to strengthen climate and disaster risk finance as part of their core national development priorities. Meeting that demand requires sustained investment in the capabilities, analytics, and market infrastructure that make financial protection work at scale.”
“This partnership with GSSP brings complementary resources that allow SEADRIF to move faster and reach further, expanding the development of risk analytics, deepening engagement with domestic insurance markets, and accelerating the pace at which ASEAN countries can access the financial protection they need.”
