Hyperion X, the data and technology focused unit of the global Hyperion Insurance Group, has hired former JLT employee Mark Shumway to the role of Head of Strategic Advisory.

hyperion-x-mark-shumwayShumway was most recently the Global head of Strategic Advisory at reinsurance brokerage JLT Re and also a representative of JLT Capital Markets, the insurance-linked securities (ILS) structuring and M&A arm of the firm.

Prior to that, Shumway worked at reinsurance broker Guy Carpenter in Strategic Advisory and he has also held roles at rating agency A.M. Best and consulting firm KPMG.

Now, Shumway is reunited with former colleague David Flandro, who recently joined Hyperion X as its new Managing Director, Analytics.

Shumway had worked closely with Flandro in both of his previous reinsurance brokerage positions.

Hyperion Insurance Group has been steadily hiring a raft of experienced reinsurance broking (first Nick Griffiths, followed by Dave Saxton), analytics, advisory and capital markets expertise, as it looks to build out expertise to assist its clients and to realise opportunities across the many areas of the market it operates.

Hyperion X Analytics is a joint venture between Hyperion X and RKH Reinsurance Brokers, which will look to leverage technology, data and insight to better inform use of reinsurance capital and risk transfer.

Shumway’s expertise in advisory, reinsurance and capital markets will be invaluable to the company as it looks to put its analytics expertise to good use alongside its growing capabilities in reinsurance broking and advisory.

Barnaby Rugge-Price, CEO of Hyperion X, commented on the appointment, “Mark Shumway is the leading adviser covering capital, growth, ratings, regulatory, and shareholder value in the insurance sector. He has been instrumental in increasing the value of multiple firms across a range of geographies and disciplines.”

“As a leader within Hyperion X Analytics, Mark will be able to leverage his advisory skills using the sector’s most relevant financials, claims and pricing data. This will create significant value creation opportunities for Hyperion clients,” Rugge-Price continued.

Shumway added, “I am excited to join the Hyperion Insurance Group, the uniquely innovative, client-centric service platform for the insurance sector. At Hyperion X, we are building an analytics and advisory offering that, rather than simply ticking boxes, is focussed on meeting the needs of our clients, their policyholders and shareholders.”
