Sean McGovern, Chair of the LMG and CEO of AXA XL, UK & Lloyd’s, emphasised the essential role of insurance in the endeavour, stating, “The transition to a net zero world will affect our clients’ business models, product needs and risk characteristics. While people often talk about green finance as the main driver of these projects, insurance is a crucial but often overlooked partner.”

In the report, the challenges confronted by investors, developers, and other stakeholders throughout the entire lifecycle of green projects are meticulously dissected.

The goal is to illustrate precisely where and how insurance can act as a critical mitigator of these challenges, from the project’s inception and securing financing to construction, operations, and, when necessary, dismantling or repurposing.

McGovern further emphasised that insurance isn’t merely an occasional player in this arena; it is a dedicated partner throughout the journey.

Green initiatives require consistent and multifaceted support, and with its extensive experience in managing risks across various sectors, the insurance industry is uniquely positioned to instill confidence in green projects from their inception to their fruition.

The report, authored by Oxbow Partners, was formulated through extensive interviews with a diverse group of London Market stakeholders.

These include brokers, syndicates, and company market insurers, who contributed valuable insights, perspectives, and real-world case studies that showcase how insurance has been instrumental in supporting projects at every stage of their lifecycle.

Whether by offering specialised versions of conventional insurance products or by devising innovative solutions to address emerging complex risks, the London Market has demonstrated its ability to leverage its scale, expertise, and history of innovation to propel the vision of a sustainable future into reality.

This report comes at a critical juncture when the global community is intensifying its efforts to combat climate change and transition to a net-zero carbon economy.

By shining a spotlight on the indispensable role of insurance in advancing these objectives, the London Market Group’s initiative is expected to catalyse further collaboration between the insurance industry and the sustainable development sector, ultimately accelerating the journey towards a greener and more sustainable world.
