OdysseyRe appoints Humberto Contasta to new role

18th August 2022 - Author: Pete Carvill

OdysseyRe has gained a new vice president of treaty underwriting in Humberto Contasta.

The announcement was made on LinkedIn and stated that Contasta would be joining the firm at its Miami office. He comes to OdysseyRe after nearly five years at TRANSRE where he was assistant vice president for property treaty underwriting, following a stint as a senior underwriter.

Before TRANSRE, Contasta spent over fourteen years at the Transatlantic Reinsurance Company in a number of underwriting roles.

Contasta is not the only hire made by OdysseyRe in recent months. In May, the firm said Michael Finnegan had re-joined the company as senior vice president and head of US general casualty treaty.

The firm has said that Finnegan will succeed Steve Van de Graaf, who is retiring after 27 years of service.

Finnegan most recently served as SVP and Head of Wholesale Casualty at Everest Insurance Company.

He also spent over a decade serving in various senior positions at Liberty Mutual, including president and COO of Liberty Mutual Reinsurance, CUO at Liberty International Underwriters, and president of Ironshore’s Specialty Casualty Division.

Brian Quinn, CEO of OdysseyRe’s North America Division, said: “Steve Van de Graaf has had a long, distinguished career at Odyssey, which includes bringing our General Casualty treaty portfolio to an all-time high in terms of gross premiums written in 2021. We are grateful for his dedication and many contributions over the past three decades.”

Addressing Finnegan’s appointment, Quinn, added: “We are pleased to welcome Michael back to the OdysseyRe family. His extraordinary background, and his blend of casualty expertise, in both the primary and reinsurance markets, will be highly beneficial to our clients.”

Addressing his return to OdysseyRe, Finnegan said: “I am delighted to return to the Company. OdysseyRe has a great team with an established portfolio, and I look forward to helping the casualty team reach even greater heights.”
