As insurers across the Asia Pacific region target growth via international expansion and specialisation, the abundance of reinsurance capital is enabling strategic flexibility and the opportunity to optimise programme structures and improve capital efficiency, at a time when emerging trends such as artificial intelligence (AI) and its infrastructure create new opportunities in the region, according to Gallagher Re.

gallagher re logoThe reinsurance broker’s latest APAC Market Watch report analysed 14 APAC market economies, where GDP growth on averaged 4.4% in 2025, so above the global average of 2.9%, as emerging markets grew by 5.3%.

Gallagher Re emphasises that the region “continues to offer one of the most compelling long-term growth opportunities for the global insurance industry,” with substantial opportunities linked to economic development, infrastructure investment, and rising protection needs.

However, the protection gap remains huge in many parts of the region, with Gallagher Re finding that non-life insurance penetration sits at just 1.1% across emerging Asia, compared with 2.3% in mature Asia, which highlights the size of the opportunity for carriers operating in the region to support economic development, infrastructure investment, and growing risk transfer needs in the coming years.

The reinsurance broker’s comprehensive APAC market report identifies international expansion, abundance reinsurance capacity, and AI as the key forces reshaping the region’s insurance market.

Domestic APAC markets continue to mature, which Gallagher Re says is pushing insurers to increasingly pursuing growth through international expansion and specialisation as they look to diversify earnings through cross-border expansion, specialty insurance products and reinsurance operations.

The report highlights significant opportunities across APAC from the rapid infrastructure development, growing investment in renewable energy and energy transition projects, while the increased adoption of electric vehicles and continued digitalisation are creating demand for new solutions across property, construction, engineering, liability, and specialty lines.

Gallagher Re believes that the rapid evolution of AI and the infrastructure supporting it is one of the most significant emerging trends in the region, providing new underwriting lines for insurers as growing investment in data centres, semiconductors, digital networks, and advanced manufacturing facilities fuels demand for solutions across numerous lines of business.

As APAC insurers expand into new regions and markets, they will undoubtedly require greater reinsurance protection to enable and support growth opportunities. Of course, there’s currently an abundance of reinsurance capital looking to be deployed, which, as noted by Gallagher Re, is providing carriers in the region with strategic flexibility as they increasingly look to optimise programme structures and improve capital efficiency.

Roshan Perera, Chief Executive Officer, APAC, Gallagher Re, said, “Asia Pacific remains one of the most compelling long-term growth markets for the global insurance industry. Strong economic growth, low insurance penetration across many markets and increasing investment in infrastructure, technology and energy transition initiatives are creating substantial opportunities for insurers throughout the region.

“What is particularly notable is the breadth of opportunities available across Asia Pacific. We are seeing growth driven by infrastructure development, renewable energy investment, electric vehicle adoption, international expansion, specialty insurance and emerging technology risks.”

Perera added, “At the same time, strong balance sheets and abundant reinsurance capacity are giving insurers more strategic flexibility than they have had in recent years. Organizations that can combine underwriting discipline with innovation will be best positioned to capitalize on the next phase of growth across Asia Pacific.”
