RenaissanceRe (RenRe) CEO Kevin O’Donnell highlighted the forward-looking nature of the company’s acquisition of Validus Re.

kevin-odonnell-ceo-renaissance-reRenRe is aiming to become a top-5 global property and casualty reinsurer with the acquisition of Validus and all its subsidiaries from global player AIG for around $3 billion.

“This is a forward looking transaction. So, I look at the quality of the portfolio and what it does to us, the efficiency that we can bring to it with the third party capital vehicles, the ceded, the opportunities we have for growth.”

The CEO believes that the acquisition represents a harmonious balance, where all parties involved have found the optimal approach to bring the transaction together. Expressing satisfaction with the safeguarding measures in place for reserves, the CEO also expressed great enthusiasm regarding the prospects of integrating the acquired portfolio.

Recognising it as a solid foundation for future growth, they conveyed their excitement for the opportunities that lie ahead.

With a continuous influx of new capital and a thriving market, the CEO expressed confidence in the industry’s robust demand, projecting its strength to extend well into 2024.

“There’s always new capital coming in. Right now, we are still seeing strong demand, we expect strong demand to continue into 2024. So, I think having new capital is a sign of a healthy market.”

According to CEO O’Donnell, this acquisition represents a distinctive opportunity due to the portfolio’s composition. The capital raised will be fully deployed immediately upon closing, making it an attractive proposition.

Notably, the portfolio aligns with RenRe’s underwriting expertise, encompassing familiar geographies and lines of business for which the company already possesses advanced systems and technology.

O’Donnell emphasises that incorporating this portfolio onto their existing platform is a unique proposition. Simultaneously, the company maintains excess capital, enabling them to pursue organic growth opportunities in parallel.

By executing this acquisition amidst a challenging market, RenRe demonstrates their confidence in the venture’s potential, driven by the scarcity of comparable opportunities that enable full deployment in the same market, while maintaining a steadfast focus on underwriting familiar lines of business in known geographies.
