Spire Global partners with NVIDIA to revolutionise AI-driven weather prediction

20th March 2024 - Author: Beth Musselwhite

Spire Global, an international provider of space-based data and analytics, has partnered with NVIDIA to enhance AI-driven weather prediction, aiming to improve forecasting accuracy and mitigate the impact of extreme weather events.

Michael Eilts, general manager of weather and climate at Spire, highlights, “As our world grapples with dynamic shifts in climate, anticipating and mitigating the impact of extreme-weather events poses escalating challenges for companies, individuals, and communities.”

In this collaboration, Spire will integrate its Radio Occultation (RO) data and proprietary data assimilation (DA) capabilities with NVIDIA Earth-2 Cloud APIs to enhance climate and weather predictions using AI technology.

Spire’s constellation of satellites, utilising RO technology, offers comprehensive global coverage, delivering precise vertical profiles of temperature, pressure, and humidity, even in remote and under-observed regions.

NVIDIA’s Earth-2 platform incorporates various numerical models (ICON, IFS), neural network models (FourCastNet, GraphCast, etc.), and data federation and visualisation with NVIDIA Omniverse technologies. This aims to simulate and visualise the global atmosphere quickly and effectively.

Eilts emphasises that this collaboration aims to revolutionise weather forecasting, stating, “Aligning Spire’s proprietary data and unmatched global weather coverage with NVIDIA’s cutting-edge technology and expertise positions us to markedly elevate the accuracy of weather prediction. This collaboration will help ensure our customers are not just informed but empowered to proactively address the evolving climate landscape.”

By leveraging NVIDIA’s advanced technology, Spire aims to deliver forecast products that were previously computationally infeasible. This includes rapidly updating global forecasts, large ensemble systems to capture diverse weather outcomes, and generative AI downscaling models for detailed local forecasts.

This enhanced weather prediction will provide Spire’s customers across various sectors with extended lead times and improved forecast accuracy. Additionally, it will bolster Spire’s DeepVision™ weather risk mitigation platform, maritime route optimisation, and renewable energy power forecasts.
