The industry needs to share the knowledge it gains to help towards global resilience: BMS Re’s Chandler

3rd October 2023 - Author: Jack Willard

During a recent interview with Reinsurance News, BMS Re’s President & Chief Executive Officer, US, Pete Chandler discussed what areas of growth he hopes to see within the company over the next few years.

He explained that BMS Re is very excited about what is currently taking place within the organization today, as he pointed towards the company’s ongoing fast-paced growth.

“We are very much looking forward to what lies on the horizon and the positive impact our growth trajectory is having on our businesses, our people and our clients.”

“We have seen tremendous growth over the last several years with even better prospects for the future, highlighted by the US growth in programs, facultative and regional mutual business that are excellent examples of growth driven by differentiated solutions we are delivering to clients.

“As we look around the world, I would argue that BMS is more connected as an organization today than we have ever been before. This year we have been very fortunate to make some significant hires, as we have added talent around the world as well as in the US.

“What we would like to see over the next year is even more connectivity, where we bring together all the resources within our organization. Regardless of geography, we are going to find the best resources and bring them to bear on behalf of our clients and prospects going forward. In the aggregate as we continue to build, evolve and grow a lot of it for us is making sure that we remain visible and ensuring everybody is well aware of who we are, what our differentiated capabilities are, and what we can offer.”

Moving forward, Chandler discussed what he thinks of the role that reinsurance plays towards global resilience.

“As an industry I believe that we do have an incredibly unique perspective on major areas such as global warming, and the wildfires and storm activity that we have seen recently. We simply have to address it, and I think there is nobody better situated than the insurance and reinsurance industries to provide expertise and knowledge to the world on what we see and what we know, so that populations across the globe can make better informed decisions.

“We all need to reduce carbon emissions, and at a time we thought that perhaps maybe wind and solar were going to be the answers to all those problems. But we also know now that they aren’t going to be the sole answer. We need to look at every resource that is available to us on this planet to figure out what are the most effective, efficient and informed decisions that we can make to take care of our planet.”

Chandler explained that one of the key factors he believes that the industry can do to help is share the knowledge that is gained and make sure that these findings are made available for everybody to see.

“When it comes to climate change there are no borders. We all live on the same planet, period. However, what we can do as an industry is be selfless and share what we know and what we don’t know. We will not get everything perfect, but we will get to a better place more efficiently if we all work together and we owe it to each other to do that.”
