Global reinsurer Swiss Re has announced the launch of a new business unit, Alternative Capital Solutions, a division that will encompass its retrocession buying activities, as well as its insurance-linked securities (ILS).

Launching on July 1st, the Alternative Capital Solutions team will be led by long-standing senior employee Mirjam Wiget.

In her new role, Wiget will oversee and coordinate Swiss Re’s hedging strategy and execution of retro trades and ILS transactions to optimise the reinsurer’s balance sheet.

Wiget will be reporting to Martin Zingg, who has recently been appointed as the head of Swiss Re’s Alternative Capital Partners (ACP) division.

With a tenure exceeding 15 years at the global reinsurer, Wiget first joined Swiss Re in 2011, serving as a Senior Treasury Officer.

Her career within the firm includes key leadership positions such as Head of Group Performance Management and Co-Head of Group Strategy and Performance Management, with her most recent appointment being as Head of Group Strategy and FP&A in 2022.

Through her tenure, Wiget has been responsible for the oversight of financial strategy and results, playing a pivotal role in the reinsurer’s comprehensive approach to risk and capital management.

The Alternative Capital Solutions will bring together the activities around the hedging and execution of trades across traditional retrocession and ILS structures. By bringing these together, the form aims to streamline how it protects and manages its own balance-sheet.

Simultaneously Nick Meuli, who recently served as the Head of Retro Hedging and Execution at Swiss Re, is understood to be departing the firm.
