The Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers (ABIR) has announced that Bermudian Suzanne Williams has been appointed as its new Director of Policy and Regulation.
Williams will bring nearly 22 years of industry leadership experience to the Association, most recently from her role at Hiscox Re as Head of Reinsurance Compliance in Bermuda.
She has also held a number of senior positions at the Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA), including Deputy Director of Insurance Supervision, and leadership roles in Licensing & Authorizations and Restoration, Run-off Review & Monitoring.
John Huff, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ABIR, commented: “Suzanne Williams’ industry and regulatory experience make her a solid addition to ABIR, helping to continue its role as an industry-leading organization representing public-policy interests of Bermuda’s international property and casualty insurers and reinsurers that protect consumers around the world.”
Kevin O’Donnell, President and CEO of RenaissanceRe Holdings Ltd. and current Chair of ABIR, added: “Suzanne’s extensive experience in both the public and private sectors make her a good fit to serve our members.
“She brings strong technical and leadership skills to the ABIR organization and membership, at a time when a number of initiatives are underway to sustain and enhance Bermuda’s leadership position as blue-chip, well-regulated, cooperative and transparent jurisdiction. We are pleased to welcome her to ABIR.”
The appointment was announced at ABIR’s quarterly board meeting, which also took time to recognise Leila Madeiros’ 12 years of service at the Association, as she leaves to join XL Group as Head of Compliance and Regulatory Affairs.
O’Donnell said: “Leila has played a remarkable leadership role for ABIR over her long tenure. Among other things, she was instrumental in ABIR’s efforts on the Bermuda Solvency II equivalency project and for a range of other accomplishments towards ABIR’s policy work over these years.”
