Aon names Daniel Rees Director of US Flood Model Development

11th April 2023 - Author: Matt Sheehan

Global professional services firm Aon has announced the appointment of Daniel Rees as Director of US Flood Model Development.

Rees joins from Verisk, where he has spent the previous five years serving as a Senior Scientist.

In this role, he has helped to integrate AIR Worldwide’s US Hurricane and US Inland Flood models into a single new model, redeveloped its UK Storm Surge model to improve loss estimation performance and provided a comprehensive update to AIR’s flood defense database for Europe.

Prior to this, Rees spent more than six years at AIR Worldwide, a catastrophe risk modelling arm of Verisk.

He joined the company in 2011 as a GIS Analyst, before progressing to Senior GIS Analyst in 2014, and then to a position as Scientist II in 2017.

In his new role at Aon, Rees will focus his catastrophe modelling expertise specifically on US flood risk, which is becoming an increasingly important peril as more of the risk is making it into the private insurance and reinsurance marketplace.

Meanwhile, losses from floods have been on the rise due to higher exposure values, inflation and climate-related events, and flood losses after hurricanes and tropical storms have also been on the rise, becoming an increasingly large component of the overall industry loss.
