Canopius AG, a subsidiary of Sompo Holdings Inc., has announced that Mike Duffy has been appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Canopius Managing Agents, and that Sarah Willmont will become Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO) of Canopius Managing Agents and Active Underwriter of Syndicate 4444.
Duffy will also retain his position as group CUO at Canopius, which he has held since 2006. Before joining Canopius, Duffy held positions as Underwriter at Ace Ina and Managing Director at Guy Carpenter.
Willmont joined Canopius in 2014 and is currently deputy CUO at the company. She also has over 10 years’ experience as a broker at Aon Benfield and was part of its Global Re specialty team.
Commenting on the appointments, Michael Watson, executive chairman of Canopius, said: “It is a real pleasure to make these appointments. I have worked with Mike for 12 years and he is a valued partner and greatly respected by the market and our staff. Moreover, Sarah has made a huge contribution to our underwriting leadership and strategy.
“It is clear they are the right team to lead us forward and it is very encouraging to be able to make promotions from within the group, demonstrating the strength and depth that we have at Canopius.”

Willmont also commented on her new role, saying: “We have a clear underwriting strategy in place and will continue to focus our attention on those areas where we excel and can add real value, as we expand and grow the business in a sustainable way. There is a lot to do and I am looking forward to getting on with the job.”
