Carbon Underwriting Limited, a delegated authority underwriting specialist with its own Lloyd’s syndicate, has appointed Phil Wooldridge as its new Head of US Casualty and Deputy Active Underwriter, effective 28 September 2026.
In his new role, Wooldridge will grow Carbon’s book of business for US policies covering long-tail casualty risks.
He will work closely with Jeff Bright, Underwriting Director, responsible for short-tail US policies, and report to Rob Crocker, Chief Underwriting Officer at Carbon.
This appointment aligns with Carbon’s long-term strategy to enhance its presence in US casualty lines. It follows an exceptional growth period for the firm, with revenues growing from GPB 150 million to GBP 471 million between 2023-6.
Recently, the firm also secured a significant growth equity investment from FTV Capital, which will support its international expansion, particularly in the US, and accelerate the development of Carbon’s best-in-class data and analytics ecosystem, Graphene.
He has over three decades of underwriting experience, and most recently served at Gallagher Re as Head of Reinsurance for programme solutions.
In the past, Wooldridge was the Head of London US Casualty at SiriusPoint Ltd. and the Syndicate Chief Underwriting Officer of Reinsurance at MS Amlin.
Jacqui Ferrier, Chief Executive Officer, Carbon, commented on the appointment, “We are delighted Phil is joining Carbon. With three decades of experience in building profitable US casualty-focused books of business, he will be an asset from day one.
“His arrival adds considerable strength to Carbon’s senior leadership, while he is fully aligned with our ethos of underwriting discipline combined with technical expertise. Additionally, Phil’s leadership will be invaluable as we accelerate our expansion into the US market, enhance our market-leading Graphene data ecosystem, and continue to scale the Carbon business.”
Wooldridge added, “I am thrilled to join Carbon. The company is one of the most exciting players operating in the London Market, and its use of technology and commitment to data transparency is a cut above. I can not wait to get started, and I look forward to working closely with Jeff, Rob and the rest of the team.”
