Global insurance industry collaboration ClimateWise has announced Kevin O’Donnell, president and CEO of Renaissance Re as its new chair.

ClimateWiseAs well as naming O’Donnell as its new chair, the group has also appointed John Scott, head of sustainability risk at Zurich Insurance as deputy chair. O’Donnell replaces Dominic Christian who has been with ClimateWise since 2018. Lucy Stanbrough, head of emerging risks and business engagement at WTW, will continue as managing committee chair.

Bronwyn Claire, senior programme manager for ClimateWise, said: “In 2022, we celebrate 15 years of ClimateWise and our great leaders such as Dominic bringing climate risk, net zero, and resilience to the forefront for the insurance industry strategy, action, research, and disclosure.”

She added: “ClimateWise, with the leadership of Kevin and John, provides the insights and guidance for the insurance industry to raise ambition and action for net zero, resilient future with a new climate. Globally insurers must respond to the upward trend in natural disasters with losses from more extreme and more frequent events, as well as the increasing economic cost due to rising material values and density of living.”

O’Donnell just over two months after ClimateWise’s latest report found continued improvements in efforts to address climate change among its member companies.
