Independent insurance broker Lockton has announced the appointment of Russell Smith as US Property & Casualty (P&C) Claims Leader.
In his new position, Smith will focus on further strengthening and connecting Lockton’s claims and loss control capabilities across casualty, property, environmental, product recall, and related areas.
Working closely with leaders across the firm to advance claims and loss control advocacy, he aims to bolster technical capabilities and carrier relationships, support complex claims, and expand the value Lockton delivers to clients.
Smith will be based in New York and will report to Vince Gaffigan, Lockton’s US Casualty & Market Strategy Leader.
The executive brings a wealth of market, legal, technical, and claims leadership expertise to Lockton, having most recently served as Senior Vice President and Head of Casualty at Sompo.
Before his time at Sompo, Smith spent nearly two decades in key claims executive positions at Chubb/ACE, serving as Casualty Chief Technical Officer and Head of Casualty Claims.
His background encompasses extensive work in complex casualty, workers’ compensation, complex casualty, environmental, construction, product recall, professional liability, claims operations, and large-loss management.
He also began his career as a defence attorney, establishing a solid grounding in claims resolution and litigation strategy.
Smith’s appointment comes as evolving market and economic conditions generate increased complexity, including how companies manage claims as this plays a pivotal role in shaping business strategy, financial outcomes, and insurance expenses.
