Malaysian Reinsurance Berhad (Malaysian Re), Malaysia’s national reinsurer, and China Reinsurance Life Insurance Company Limited (China Re Life), a life and health reinsurer, have signed a landmark reinsurance treaty to support a dedicated framework for Cancer Precision Medicine (CPM) treatment coverage in Malaysia.

This marks Malaysia’s first reinsurance framework for advanced cancer treatments, including CAR-T cell therapy, targeted therapies, and access to overseas oncology care.

The treaty was signed during a visit by Li Qi, General Manager of China Re Life, to Malaysian Re’s headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

It forms the centrepiece of a broader healthcare ecosystem developed by Malaysian Re in partnership with China Re Life.

From product design and market engagement to distributor onboarding through a multi-channel distribution model, Malaysian Re has built a go-to-market infrastructure that converts reinsurance and retakaful capacity into accessible, consumer-ready coverage.

This end-to-end ecosystem was coordinated by Beacon Global Risk Solutions Limited, Malaysian Re’s appointed reinsurance broker for the initiative.

The multi-layered framework — spanning reinsurance/retakaful, primary insurance/takaful, direct-to-pharmacy distribution, hospitals, and partnerships with leading pharmaceutical companies — reflects a long-term commitment to expanding access to innovative and affordable cancer care solutions in Malaysia.

The CPM insurance/takaful product supported by this treaty is designed to broaden access to precision cancer care by covering selected advanced treatments. Drawing on China Re Life’s experience in supporting a large-scale CPM model in China, Malaysian Re will provide local insurers and takaful operators with access to specialised reinsurance/retakaful capacity for this growing risk segment.

The product also includes an overseas treatment benefit, enabling patients to seek care at designated oncology centres in China where medically appropriate.

Looking ahead, Malaysian Re and China Re Life plan to explore opportunities to expand their collaboration into critical illness, longevity, and health management solutions across Southeast Asia.

Both organisations are also exploring personnel exchange programmes and joint technical working groups to accelerate capability transfer between the two institutions.

Ahmad Noor Azhari Abdul Manaf, President & CEO, Malaysian Reinsurance Berhad, said, “At Malaysian Re, we believe reinsurance/retakaful should do more than transfer or sharing of risk — it should enable meaningful access to protection and care. With more than 60% of cancer patients diagnosed at late stages, this treaty with China Re Life represents an important milestone in expanding access to advanced cancer treatments with better treatment outcomes for Malaysians.

“As Malaysia’s national reinsurer, we are proud to support the development of affordable and innovative health solutions and look forward to broadening our collaboration across other medical and life insurance and takaful segments.”

Li Qi, General Manager, China Reinsurance Life Insurance Company Limited, added, “China Re Life has built its position as Asia’s leading life and health reinsurer by going where others have not — into complex, underserved risk categories that matter deeply to people’s lives. Our collaboration with Malaysian Re in Cancer Precision Medicine is a natural expression of that commitment. Southeast Asia shares the same unmet needs we addressed in China, and we are confident this partnership will deliver the same transformative impact for millions of families across the region.”
