Marsh McLennan has appointed Pat Tomlinson as the President of Mercer, a key division of the global insurance and reinsurance broker.
In this newly assumed role, Tomlinson will report to Martine Ferland, who continues to serve as Mercer CEO and Vice Chair of Marsh McLennan.
Ferland will oversee Mercer’s regional leadership until her retirement on March 31, 2024.
As President of Mercer, Tomlinson will have management responsibilities over Mercer’s global Health, Wealth, and Career practices.
Furthermore, he will retain his current positions as CEO of Marsh McLennan for the United States and Canada and President of Mercer for the same region.
Upon Ferland’s retirement, which is scheduled for March 31, 2024, Tomlinson will assume the roles of President and CEO of Mercer and Vice Chair of Marsh McLennan.
He will also become a member of Marsh McLennan’s Executive Committee, reporting directly to John Doyle, the President and CEO of Marsh McLennan.
Doyle expressed his enthusiasm for Tomlinson’s appointment, emphasising his track record of success, commitment to growth, and ability to drive transformation.
He praised Tomlinson’s deep understanding of the business and client needs, expressing eagerness to collaborate in his new role. Ferland’s leadership and empathetic approach will be missed by colleagues at Mercer and Marsh McLennan.
Doyle acknowledged her exceptional leadership and passion for clients and the company, noting the personal benefit he gained from her counsel.
Ferland expressed confidence in Tomlinson, commending his capacity to build high-performing teams, foster a commercial mindset, and prioritise collaboration and inclusion. She looks forward to working closely with him to position Mercer for ongoing success.
In response, Tomlinson expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead Mercer and collaborate with colleagues to achieve the best outcomes for clients. He acknowledged the support and leadership of Doyle and Ferland during this transitional period.
Tomlinson’s journey at Mercer began in 2014 when he joined as the US and Canada Career business leader. From 2018 to 2020, he led Mercer’s US East Market, playing a crucial role in adapting Mercer’s Health, Wealth, and Career businesses to meet evolving client needs.
Before joining Mercer, Tomlinson accumulated 17 years of experience at Aon and served as an officer in the US Army, graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point.
