14th March 2018 - Author: Matt Sheehan

The North of England Protecting and Indemnity Association (North P&I) has announced the appointment of Simon Main as Technical Director in support of the development of the North P&I and Sunderland Marine (SMI) businesses.

North P&I Club LogoMain’s appointment represents an important development in North P&I’s plans for growth and diversification at a time when the shipping industry is faced with a particularly challenging environment.

Thya Kathiravel, North P&I’s Deputy Global Director Underwriting, commented: “Following a strong performance by the Club at the 2018 renewal, we remain focused on achieving the strategic targets set by the Board and welcome the industry knowledge and experience that Simon brings to our underwriting department.”

In his new role, Main will be responsible for supporting the delivery of North’s strategy, as well as assisting the underwriting of North and Sunderland Marine’s future European Economic Area (EEA) business as the company approaches a critical stage in the establishment of its EU subsidiary.

Most recently, Main served as Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Thomas Miller’s UK P&I Club, and brings expertise in process development, change management, and strategy delivery to his new position at North.

Main commented on his appointment, saying: “North’s reputation in the market is second to none and I’m looking forward to working with the global team to build upon this deep-rooted commitment to service excellence and take it to the next level for the benefit of our membership.”
