The sale of reinsurance shares that came in the wake of one of the most active catastrophe years has reached its peak with the sector now being marked as oversold by the Buckingham research group who believe reinsurers will outperform over 2018 as they show pricing improvement.
Analysts said reinsurance stocks have gotten “bogged down in a quagmire” after initial exuberance over a pricing recovery was seen as overdone by investors as time went on.
The TCJA tax changes added to the pressure, combined with the California wildfires.
“What was lost in translation was that the loss impacted hurricane business does not even get renewed until later this year that the tax changes could be mitigated or that California wildfires losses would address some of the pricing disappointment.
“We believe that the trough has been reached and reinsures will outperform over 2018 as they climb back and show pricing improvement, an ability to address tax changes and also benefit from sector rotation back into these names from the U.S. domestics.”
Reinsurance stocks were impacted negatively in early January following broker reports which showed pricing improvement was less than hoped for.
This was spurred by investors’ concerns over the dashed hopes for price hikes, even though, as the Buckingham research group pointed out this might have been a knee-jerk reaction as “what was lost was that the loss impacted business does not even get renewed till June of 2018.”
Analysts explained that with “many stocks down double digits in 2017, 2018 could be a year of meaningful recovery as a sector rotation takes place from personal insurance names such as ALL and PGR as well as the U.S. domestic financials back into reinsurance names based on their cheap valuation.
Therefore as the year progresses, stocks that are currently down double digits could make a material recovery as investors’ fears are waylaid.
