PERILS AG has revealed its second loss estimate for European windstorm Friederike, placing damages at €1.629 billion (approximately US $2.0 billion), a slight increase from its original estimate of €1.465 billion ($1.8 billion).
Windstorm Friederike, also known as David, caused significant damage as it swept through the British Isles, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany over the 17th and 18th January, 2018.
PERILS determined that the extratropical cyclone windstorm was compact and fast-moving, with record wind-speeds of 203km/h registered on the Brocken mountain in Germany’s Saxony-Anhalt.
Friederike caused widespread travel and business disruption, particularly across Germany and the Netherlands, and was responsible for the deaths of eleven people.
At insured losses of €1.629 billion, Friederike is likely to be one of the largest European windstorm losses in recent years.
PERILS’ third loss estimate for Friederike is due to be released six months after the event, on the 17th July 2018.
