RenaissanceRe’s Steve Weinstein named ABIR Policy Committee Chair

15th February 2017 - Author: Steve Evans

The Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers (ABIR) has appointed RenaissanceRe’s Steve Weinstein as Chair of its Policy Committee.

Weinstein is Senior Vice President and Group General Counsel at Bermuda domiciled reinsurance firm RenaissanceRe Holdings Ltd., in charge of group legal, regulatory, government affairs and compliance matters.

The ABIR Policy Committee is the association’s chief policy body, looking at insurance regulation in Bermuda and overseas, international re/insurance regulatory standards, public policy issues in Bermuda, and United States natural disaster policy and insurance regulation.

He is also the Chair of RenaissanceRe Risk Sciences Foundation, a non-profit research organization at the reinsurer that innovates in risk-mitigation techniques and awareness, including overseeing the Risk Mitigation Leadership Forum.

“Steve has been a dedicated advocate for the Bermuda insurance market for a long time. Behind the scenes this has meant more than a decade in ABIR, as a founding member of the Policy Committee, contributing to the legal and regulatory solutions that have supported our market,” commented Leila Madeiros, Senior Vice President, Deputy Director and Corporate Secretary of ABIR.

Weinstein succeeds Malcolm Furbert, General Counsel – Bermuda at XL Catlin. Furbert led the Policy Committee for 5 years, facilitating substantial policy and regulation work to help achieve the recognition of Bermuda under both U.S. and EU regulatory regimes.

“We are thankful to Malcolm for his leadership and for his thoughtful approach to public policy issues on behalf of the ABIR membership. We are happy that he remains with ABIR as a serving member,” added Madeiros.
