Sompo International appoints Stefano Chiurlo to new role in Italy

Sompo International has appointed Stefano Chiurlo as head of accident and health for Europe.

Sompo InternationalChiurlo will be based in Milan and comes to the firm with more than 15 years of insurance experience, most recently as group head of health & accident for the Generali Group.

Before joining Sompo International, he held several senior technical and leadership roles in the A&H segment with Generali Group, AXA XL, XL Catlin, AXA Italy, ACE, and AIG.

Patrick Corbett, executive vice president and global head of accident and health at Sompo International Insurance, said: “Stefano is a fantastic addition to the Sompo International team and his appointment is the latest development in the building out of our A&H capability beyond a traditional London wholesale offering into the UK, Europe and around the world.

“He will have responsibility for developing and overseeing the implementation of our A&H underwriting and distribution strategy, bringing our years of expertise in A&H and significant capacity to clients across Europe.”

He added: “His wealth of experience in his field, knowledge of the European and global markets, and commercial mindset will be instrumental in driving our ambitious growth strategy.”

Chiurlo’s new role may intersect with that of Ralph Brand, who was named president of continental Europe a few weeks ago. In his new role, Brand will oversee Sompo International’s strategy in continental Europe while enhancing the offering to clients and distribution partners across the region. Brand most recently served as global head of casualty for financial lines and cyber for Zurich Insurance’s Commercial Insurance business.
