As the global reinsurance industry heads to Baden-Baden, the January renewals will of course be a big topic, and against a backdrop of a complex and increasingly interconnected risk landscape, dialogue, depth, and delivery are key to a productive insurer and reinsurer relationship.
This was the message from Nikhil da Victoria Lobo, Head of P&C for Western & Southern Europe and the Middle East & Africa at global reinsurer Swiss Re, in a video interview with Reinsurance News ahead of the annual Baden-Baden meeting.
During the interview, now available to watch in full, we explored what da Victoria Lobo expects to dominate his conversations with clients at this year’s Baden-Baden, the upcoming renewals, as well as what makes a truly constructive insurer and reinsurer partnership, and more.
Given the proximity to the 1.1 2027 renewal season, da Victoria Lobo said that he expects the renewal to be a very big topic, but not the sole focus.
“From my seat, when I look across the complexity we face in the world and the interconnectedness of risk, I think the question I will be asking my clients is, how can we as reinsurers bring to bear all the things we do from risk analytics to capacity, to even out-of-the-box thinking, to deliver to your end clients?” he said.
In the current, very competitive reinsurance operating landscape, the importance of stability and consistency have been key, but the executive emphasised that consistency doesn’t mean doing the same things, but “keeping a very open dialogue, working with an open solution mindset, and finding ways to deliver to clients.”
In terms of what makes a really productive insurer and reinsurer relationship, da Victoria Lobo highlighted dialogue, depth, and delivery.
“Of course, you want to talk and understand what’s going on, but one of the things that I think we do well, and some of the reinsurance market does well, is also going deep together with clients to really understand the nature of the portfolios and the problems. And then, of course, that’s a good conversation and that’s a great analysis, you have to deliver. And the deliverers bring solutions to bear at the front end.”
