Zurich-based reinsurer Echo Re has announced the appointment of experienced insurance executive Ankur Sharma as the Principal Officer of its India branch at the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City).
Sharma, a highly respected figure in the Indian insurance industry, joins Echo Re after nearly ten years at Swiss Re, where he most recently served as Vice President and held various roles in both the Mumbai and Bangalore offices.
His prior professional background also includes experience at Credit Suisse (currently UBS) and Accenture.
In March 2026, Echo Re was granted a licence to establish a branch office at the GIFT City, India’s first operational greenfield smart city and International Financial Services Centre.
Echo Re had maintained a presence in the Indian insurance market for more than a decade. During that time, the firm has progressively expanded its engagement and built a “well-diversified” treaty reinsurance portfolio across P&C and specialty lines.
The office in GIFT City allows the reinsurer to rapidly build upon its existing foothold in the Indian market, drive international expansion, and broaden its international treaty reinsurance footprint.
